Annual New Years Day hike

Seems like we've made this a tradition, although this year we we ventured to a new place, just outside of Superior.  We invited our friends, the Owen family, to join us.  It's a pretty short, easy hike but it's what's at the end that makes it fun!

The Arizona desert is it's own kind of beautiful.

There is this big tunnel that has been excavated into the hillside.  Using a chisel and hammer, you can hack away at the wall to dig out Apache Tears, which are pieces of black obsidian.  Legend has it that 75 Apache indians rode their horses off the side of the mountain to their deaths rather than be caught by the US Cavalry.  The families of the warriors cried when they heard of the tragedy and upon hitting the ground, their tears turned to stone.  We spent a good part of the morning digging at the walls, collecting treasures to take home.  This place was like a little boys HEAVEN!!
Gavin & Max, little buddies
Bentley hammered out the first GIANT one!

I love fun family adventures like this!  We all need a little more time in the great outdoors!
