Father's Day & Matt's Birthday

Father's Day and Matt's birthday are always pretty close to each other, if not on the same day.

Our anniversary, my birthday and Mother's Day are within one month of each other.

I've always made a big deal about not combining gifts for these occasions.  However, in the justification of splurging a bit, I combined Matt's Father's Day and birthday gift.... and gave it to him a day early.  I rarely do that, just because it irritates Matt- he can't stand the suspense and I'm so nonchalant about it.  I did want him to be able to use his gift on Father's Day, though, plus I needed help with it.

BOOM!  A new grill + accessories

I had it delivered to our friends' house down the street from us a couple weeks in advance, then had Derek help wheel it down the street with his hand truck.  That sucker weighed 125 lbs!!!  Matt was VERY surprised AND happy!  Our current grill is about 7 years old and is falling apart.  I'm always afraid it's going to explode every time we light it!  Matt had been complaining about it more earnestly lately so I took his cues and did some research to find a well built grill that will last.  This isn't any behemoth grill but it will suit our needs just fine.

I love this picture of Matt & his girls!!

And the whole crew!

Of course we took a quick visit up to see both our Dads for Father's Day.  We're so grateful for such good men in our lives.

Matt's 33rd birthday was on Wednesday and pretty uneventful since he was working all day.  I was planning on making dinner but the birthday boy decided that he wanted to eat out instead so we went to Serrano's.
We came home with the intention to have pizzookies for dessert but things went downhill really quickly and I'm sad to say that it wasn't a happy ending to Matt's birthday.  :(  Summertime is hard on everyone, being off schedule and unfortunately tempers sometimes get the best of you and tantrums happen.  I hope Matt at least had a smidgen of a happy birthday.

Our one and only Summer "trip"

I made the mistake of telling Preston that we were going to the cabin several weeks beforehand.  He literally asked me DAILY if today was "cabin day."  I should know better by now!

No husbands this time~ just me and my kids, Jen and her kids, the mother-in-law and Grandma LeBaron.  Aunt Laura was there for two days during our stay as well.  I didn't even bring my camera out of the car, which was kinda liberating.  Although I do feel like I'm taking too little REAL pictures these days. I need to be better about that.

We got up to the cabin after some stressful morning events.  I was doing SO good, felt more prepared than I ever have before, making good time and packed the entire Suburban by myself.  I let Hayden sleep as long into the morning as possible, which she has been doing great at, only to go in and be greeted by and awful stench....  She had puked and had a nasty poopy diaper!!!  I'm not sure what point she had thrown up, but I was horrified and could hardly breathe through the cleanup!!  I put Hayden in the bathtub and instructed Brooklyn to supervise while I cleaned the mess up.  I stripped the entire crib, rinsed off her crib bedding and blanket, threw it all in the washer on sanitize setting, Clorox wiped the mattress and every rail and slat of the crib.  She didn't have a fever at this point but it was obvious she wasn't really feeling well.  THEN, when everything was loaded into the car, I went to start it and click, click, click -- NOTHING.  Are you kidding me??!  First a sick baby and now my car won't start.  I called my dad, who thankfully works in the neighborhood across the way, and he came right over to help.  He jumped my car, then I took it to O'Reilly so they could run a diagnostic check on the battery.  They said it was fine, so I loaded up the kids in the car, said a quick prayer and off we went.

We stayed until Friday, doing the usual cabin things- kids running the mountain, eating too much junk, staying up way too late, kids getting up at the crack of dawn, playing card games, visiting the Pine store.

Matt got these old hats of Grandpa LeBaron's for the kids.

Hayden was TERRIFIED to walk on the porch!!  I think it's because she was sure she'd slip through the 1/4" space between the slats!  On Thursday, she finally got brave enough and found her way down the stairs to the dirt.

We've been teaching the kids a few of the easier card games that the LeBaron's play.  They love being included!

Blake had dishes duty as a punishment for having a nasty attitude.  He also lost a tooth the last morning we were there.

The girls.  We missed Sophie!!

I love being at the cabin but everyone is completely worn out and practically delirious by the time go home.  Oh, and because we didn't have enough fun, the car wouldn't start AGAIN when we tried to leave and Gavin threw up twice on the drive home.  Thankfully, I was well prepared with ziploc bags because he was complaining of a yucky tummy that morning.

Because the LeBaron side of the family is getting so large, it's not very often that we get a chance to spend time there.  I love the opportunity we have to relax a bit and for the kids to make memories with their cousins.  Matt and I have a goal one day to own a cabin where we can see our posterity continue to do the same.  Someday....

Jury Duty

On May 20th, I got this little beauty in the mail~
I've been summoned! #noexcusesthistime #sincewhendotheyonlygiveoneweeknotice

I've received several jury summons in the mail during the course of my married life (funny, I never remember Matt getting a single one....) but they always seem to come right before I'm about to have a baby so I always am able to get out of it.  For whatever reason, this time, I was really intrigued to see what the process was all about, so I made arrangement for the kids for the day and off I headed to the courthouse in Florence.

I had no idea what to expect.  I checked in, then sat in a room with hundreds of other people.  They showed an orientation video then explained they had three trials to select juries for.  They called names and we went with our group up into the courtroom.  The judge randomly called names to fill the spots in the box, then briefed us on what the case was, the charges being brought against the defendant and the anticipated length of the trial.  Next, he asked "screening" questions of all the prospective jurors, people were dismissed, we stood and gave a little background about ourselves.  We were then excused for lunch.  After the break, we were brought back into the courtroom and the jurors were selected, 12 total.  I ended up being chosen!  From that point on, we had to go everywhere together as a group, escorted by the bailiff.  We weren't allowed to discuss ANY aspect of the case, with ANYone, including the other jurors.
My cute little accessory for the next three days! #firsttimer #ofcourseigotpicked #mylipsaresealed

The crime was committed over 3 years ago (!!!) and the defendant was being charged for burglary in the first degree and for being in possession of burglary tools.  Items were stolen from a bank owned property.  It was a very mild case.  I can't imagine serving on a jury where there is abuse or death involved.  That would be absolutely emotionally draining!

I was there all day Tuesday, half days Wednesday and Thursday, then all day Friday.  Friends and family were kind enough to help watch the kids.  It was a lot of in and out of the courtroom.  We'd listen to testimony, take notes, have a break, come back in, do more of the same, take another break, etc.  It was intriguing to watch how the prosecuting attorneys presented their case against the defendant.  The defense attorney objected over and over and over again, which at some point, got a little ridiculous   and I had to resist the urge to laugh out loud.  A couple of us started keeping tally of his objections.  And the other weirdest thing was that the defendant had an IDENTICAL twin brother that sat in the audience during the whole trial!  Freaked me out!

Day 4 of trial, supposed to be over today. #fingerscrossed #juryduty #dontaskcanttell

All the evidence and the testimony made it pretty clear that this guy was completely guilty.  He admitted to driving the truck the night in question, he had ALL the items missing from the home in the truck, but claimed that he "found" the items lying by the side of the road and assumed they were left as trash.  HOWEVER, according to the law, you must be able to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the person is guilty in order to convict them.  I was anxious to be able to FINALLY deliberate with the other jurors and talk this thing out.  Then I got randomly selected as an alternate, which means I did NOT get to participate in the final deliberation or have any say in the verdict.  Poo!  What a huge disappointment after investing all that time and energy!!!!!  The other alternate juror and I decided to sit and wait, hoping that they would reach a verdict by the end of the day.  We chatted in the lobby until the bailiff called down and said we could come back in for the reading of the verdict.

The jury found the defendant NOT GUILTY of the burglary, but GUILTY of possession of burglary tools.  There just was not enough evidence (footprints, fingerprints) to prove that it was HIM that broke into the house and/or HIM that took the items.  We (jurors) were able to chat with the defense attorney and the detective over the case afterward and we learned a LOT more info and backstory that was not shared that would have made things more clear.  Even the defense attorney said the guy was guilty as heck.  But that's the process!

It was really hard on the kids, my being gone for four days and being shuffled among different people.  Made me realize that maybe it does make a difference that I'm able to stay home at with them on a daily basis!  I don't know how moms do it, the ones that have to work all day, then come home and prep dinner and have enough time to spend with their children.  Definitely gave me perspective!

Then the reward~ $12/day plus mileage.  Cha-ching!  Haha!
Payday!!! #mommagetsapaycheck #jurydutyperks #letsgoshopping

It was a great experience and I'm glad that I had the opportunity to see how the judicial system works.  I'm off the hook for 2 years now, but will look forward to the next chance I get!
